I see your point, but I feel there's a difference between living forever and living forever as a product. You don't get new chess expansions with new pieces that you need to buy to remain a grandmaster every couple of years.

I'd argue that there is one solution, but it is one that business people don't want to speak about: Sunsetting.
If you restrict your game to two-three expansions, things like power and feature creep are no longer an issue. However, your game won't live forever.
Same goes for MMOs, really.
