As food prices rise, Mamdani wants public grocery stores in New York. Can it work? Experts say there’s plenty of precedent both in the US and abroad for state-supported food infrastructure

"'Sometimes in places where the private market won't step in, the public can and should.'"

The oil industry buys off Congress. No action on climate.

The NRA buys off Congress. No action on guns.

Insurance companies buy off Congress. No action on health care.

The list goes on and on.

Money in politics is the root of our dysfunction.

If you don't already, watch Colbert. He is a man with no more f*cks left to give. And it's glorious.

Check out this song parody from last night's show: Mike Johnson Delays House Epstein Vote Until September

So just to be clear - the β€œprotect the kids” party is now shutting the government down to protect sexual predators? Do we have this right?

Acceptance (posted by bisexualbunny)
My mom "accepts me", but she "knows I only chose to be bisexual so I didn't have to break up with my girlfriend when she Started transition."
My dad "accepts me" but often reminds me that "monogamy is important no matter who you're attracted to" because bi girls are more likely to cheat.
My girlfriend's mom "accepts her" but won't use her chosen name and only uses the right pronouns half the time.
My pan friend's mom "accepts her" but still calls her girlfriend her "best friend" she "knows my friend will find the right boy someday"
A gay guy I met in class has parents that "accept him" but when he said he was being bullied his sexuality said that "he should just be less public about it."
None of us have been kicked out. We still talk to our parents. They give us food and clothes and help pay college tuition. They haven't threatened to kill us. They haven't actually killed us.
They "accept us"
But no they don't.

The idea of civil rights is that all people are equal members of society, and therefore mechanisms that make people unequal are illegitimate. The far right has built a perverse mirror ideology, in which races are known to be unequal, and therefore mechanisms that make us equal are illegitimate.

There is an unknown number of women in this country who were raped by the President of the United States when they were children.

They have to watch an entire political party in Congress protect their rapist while being sanctimonious, hypocritical pricks.

Here's a 2/27/25 letter from Pam Bondi to Kash Patel acknowledging receipt of copious documentation on Epstein, including his contacts and victims, and demanding much more such documentation which had been withheld. This link is still posted, today, on the publicly accessible DOJ site.

The DeSantis administration has not made public a list of names of the immigrants held at the facility in heavy duty tents at an airstrip in the Florida Everglades.
Individuals sent to the makeshift detention center do not show up in an
online government database that allows the public to search for immigrant detainees' whereabouts. Lawyers say they
have had difficulty locating clients sent to the site, often learning that they are there when detainees call family members.

An enforced disappearance is considered to be the arrest, detention, abduction or any other form of deprivation of liberty by agents of the State or by persons or groups of persons acting with the authorization, support or acquiescence of the State, followed by a refusal to acknowledge the deprivation of liberty or by concealment of the fate or whereabouts of the disappeared person, which place such a person outside the protection of the law (Article 2 of the ICPED and Preamble of the Declaration on the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearance)
It is characterized by three cumulative elements (defined in A/HRC/16/48/Add.3):
1. Deprivation of liberty against the will of the person;
2. Involvement of government officials, at least by acquiescence;
3. Refusal to acknowledge the deprivation of liberty or concealment of the fate or whereabouts of the disappeared
person.

Florida is committing "enforced disappearance," a very serious violation of international human rights law.

It's when you assemble the whole picture that you have to raise the question if the intention is to destroy this country and whether this country is in fact being destroyed.

In 1965 median CEO pay was 20xs what their line workers wage was. Now its 300-400 times. They don't earn that. They're not worth that. They don't work 300 times harder or better. They are in a ponsi system that extracts from workers & consumers to reward the few at the top.

Here’s the problem with the do-nothing crowd now telling us what to do: while they spent their years watching Republicans illegitimately pack the Supreme Court, take away voting rights from people of color, and systematically chip away at the constitutional order, all the while they offered only a simple defense of norms and decorum β€” in a blind hope that one day soon Republicans would wake up to find their better angels. That got us exactly where we are today. The reckoning is here. And now that this culture of timidity is on full display, these same do-nothing Democrats want to blame our losses on the defense of black people, trans kids, and immigrants, instead of on their own lack of guts and gumption.

When people say that if a certain set of ideas were going to work, they would have worked by now, I wonder if they seriously believe that no one has ever had their past, present, or future ideas before. Because the whole "if that was going to work" argument could be applied to virtually anything. (Unless you've got something completely novel to offer, and if you do, please, I am eager to hear about it.) It's simply not true that if an idea or strategy were winnable, it would have won by now. When you are squaring off against giants, oppressors, people with infinitely more power and resources, you can have a great strategy, a great team, etc, and still fail. Again and again and again. There is no magical formula that makes winning a fight for liberation something other than a long shot. We don't fight wickedness or struggle for freedom and human dignity because there's some magical formula that will make victory inevitable. (If you do believe victory is inevitable, I respect your faith, but do not share it.) Personally, I am in the struggle because I live in this world, and endeavoring to make it better, to make it free, and to make life decent for everyday people is the only way forward that I can see. I don't want to live in this world, such as it is, so I live in the pursuit of making it otherwise. There is no perfect solution. There's no blueprint. There's struggle, and everything that we manage to make worthwhile along the way.

ICE is going to get someone killed.

This was outside 100 Montgomery in SF’s Financial District.

If you needed proof these rookie hires aren’t trained, here it is. Real feds de-escalate. They call for backup. They don’t drag people down the street w/a car.

Hope everyone’s OK.

When was the last time a party of the right was encouraged to select a leader that could appeal to the left?

Yet every time a party of the left has a leadership race, being able to appeal to the right is supposedly massively important.

Not having it. Let's stop watering ourselves down.
