Last spring, the faculty overwhelmingly voted to ratify freedom-of-expression principles that truly support real differences of opinion and perspective. The administration and the board of trustees have thus far blocked their adoption.
All this comes at a time when higher educationβs crucial role in cultivating critical thought and inquiry and producing knowledge is under political attack.
Ours is a cautionary tale about what happens when rhetoric substitutes for material protections of free speech. Rather than unilateral decisions by administrators about what constitutes acceptable conversation, colleges and universities must have policies that involve the faculty, students and the staff in the robust protection of debate and inquiry.

Actually, Slavery Was Very Bad
The presidentβs latest criticism of museums is a thinly veiled attempt to erase Black history.
I debated writing this. It can feel tempting, upon encountering yet another instance of this administrationβs racism, to let it be. How many ways can you say the same thing over and over again? And yet we have to write it down, if for nothing else, so those who come after us know we were against it.

He has kept among us in times of peace Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures. He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
