Ease born of repetition. I stepped back from the pulpit. Aumbrose cleared his throat. His baritone boomed out, “With the power vested in me and my family as protector of the Noethi family, I hereby grant you this staff of office, which your father used, and his father before him, and his mother before him.” His voice filled the room almost as completely as the bell had. He sounded self-assured, but there was also a sense of impatience to his words. He really wanted to wrap this up quick, huh?
