Ross can’t tell if death squads in the streets & illegal wars overseas are worse than pronouns & universal healthcare.

Came across the phrase "cognitive DDOS" to describe our present culture.

Understood instantly what it meant.

“I care about this and want to know more about it” is a great reason to study something in college. So is “Huh, that sounds interesting.”

Like I said, it’s not everybody’s thing, but being able to pursue your curiosity without a tangible other goal in mind is a good thing, I think.

Stop pre-negotiating. Stop telling voters they have to sacrifice minorities and the marginalized to have a chance of winning. Stop telling voters to settle, to not ask for everything, to be reasonable. Don't be reasonable. Demand the world. The world belongs to us. They don't have more right to it.

Imagine you have two machines. One you can open up and examine all of its workings, and if you give it every picture of a cat on the whole internet, it can reliably distinguish cats trom non-cats. The other is a black box and it can also reliably distinguish cats from non-cats if you give it half a dozen pictures of cats, some apple sauce, and a hug. These machines sort of do the same thing, but even without knowing how the second one works 1 am extremely confident in saying it doesn't work the same way as the first one.

The New York Rangers expect me, a woman, to come back and watch the rest of the season after I watched the people who run the organization and two of its players laugh at female athletes. I think I’m good on hockey for the rest of the season. It’s been, like, really ruined.

Henceforth, I will be describing the way that U.S. men’s hockey spectacularly squandered good will, brand recognition, and fan loyalty as “pulled a Target.”

They pulled a Target.

In this year's state legislature, a bipartisan measure - House Bill 369, The Parking Lot Reform & Modernization Act - would eliminate government-mandated parking minimums statewide.

This is a good idea, and North Carolina should do it.

I mean, we went and put the warnings in all the movies and novels and comic books and stuff, didn’t we?

They Haven't Even Started Spending Yet The terrifying math of money in politics.

"Rich people and corporations have not even begun to spend what they are capable of spending in order to buy political influence. If you think that we have too much money in politics now, well, it can get much, much worse."

First fit-up of the Stickley No. 74-style “Book Rack” I’ve been working on for far too long.

I’ve been shaping each of the 8 tenons individually & this is the first time I’ve put it all together.

Now to make the little mortises in each tenon for the pegs which will hold it together.

Perhaps you dislike The Beatles…

…as both examples — TFF’s ‘Seeds of Love’ and XTC’s Oranges & Lemons — are the most openly, explicitly, and deeply Beatles-influenced products in the catalog of each band.

I feel this so strongly. Covid was a test of our moral integrity & decency -- *not just elites, but all of us* -- and we failed.

I genuinely think one reason Covid has been memory-holed so hard, & so crusted w/ myths & conspiracy theories, is that on some level we know this & are ashamed.

Average White Band’s classic “Pick Up the Pieces” hits #1 today in 1975.

“.. The name of the band started out as an ‘in’ saying among us,” said bassist Alan Gorrie. “You know, we’d be listening to a track and say ‘not bad for an average white band.’ I guess it just stuck ..”
