Personally, I don't think the responsibility to say no lies with the troops. It lies with their commanding officers up the chain, who understand exactly how unlawful and egregious their actions are. They're obligated to take that burden, not the poor schmucks on the ground.

I understand that the Governor can't just come out and encourage acts of uncivil disobedience or lawless resistance. Then what, exactly, does he have in mind? Instruction manuals would be helpful. Otherwise I could see a lot of very creative acts of improvisational protest.

The midterms are 15 months away; we might not have a country left by then. If we're standing up and fighting back, if we're not just holding hands and thinking nice thoughts, what exactly is he asking us to do? What does that mean on the ground when the National Guard is massing on our streets?

If I understood Gov. Newsom correctly, he's empowering and encouraging his constituents -- and by extension, the rest of us -- to not follow the same old rules. What does that mean? Vote in the midterms? We're already going to do that.

It wouldn't surprise me if some individual or consortium offers to set Stephen Colbert up with his own streaming channel. (Are you listening, George Clooney? Robert Di Niro?)

The same goods and services are used for all procedures. But not every one is billed at the same amount. So some entities are being overpaid or underpaid, and some patients are being overcharged or undercharged. Or, as I suspect, nobody knows exactly what any of it actually costs.

So what is the actual cost and how is it calculated? Every line item, from the surgical instruments, to the drugs, to the hospital staff, to the AI-driven equipment, to the electricity to keep the lights on in the operating room has a cost attached to it.

I will be paying $390 for my upcoming hip replacement surgery. Thank you, health insurance. If I had to pay for the whole thing myself it would be $66,453. I'm sure Medicare and UHC are not paying that amount; I'm sure they'll pay way less.
