An Electoral Strategy for a New York City Socialist Agenda
New York City socialists have to figure out how to scale up quickly with a potential Zohran Mamdani mayoralty on the horizon.
I write about how NYC-DSA and the Left can use a Mamdani mayoralty to organize a mass base around enacting policy gains and long-term campaigns for the structural changes that would tip the playing field for working-class New Yorkers. jacobin.com/2025/08/elec...

OCASIO-CORTEZ STATEMENT ON SENATOR SANDERS' RESOLUTIONS TO BLOCK WEAPONS TRANSFERS TO THE ISRAELI GOVERNMENT
"The Israeli government's blockade of food, water, and medicine is a war crime. It is unthinkable that at this moment, when a third of Gaza has not eaten in days, the Senate would greenlight the bombs, guns, and munitions that have already been used to kill 60,000 Palestinians. Today, every Senator has a choice to make: they can uphold U.S. law by preventing the transfer of these weapons, or they can cower to Netanyahu and hand over the arms being used to perpetuate a genocide.
"Every day, more of our constituents and allies on the international stage are calling for Congress to end this war and save lives. The Senate must stop this transfer of weapons, and members of Congress in both chambers must increase pressure on Israel to surge aid into Gaza, hold Netanyahu accountable, and stop sending bombs.”
Read my statement urging the Senate to pass @sanders.senate.gov’ resolutions to block weapons transfers to the Israeli government ⬇️

What is DSA's NPC, and why should we care?
Put it this way: whether the mass-politics orientation of Zohran's campaign is reproduced by DSA at the national level will be decided by whichever tendency controls the NPC.
The two main tendencies are explained masterfully by @vincent--l.bsky.social.

Two-panel graph analyzing U.S. House Elections from 2006-2024. Left panel shows Democratic vote share increases as turnout gap with Republicans narrows, with a positive trend line (46-56% on y-axis). Right panel shows Democratic vote share decreases as party positioning moves from liberal to conservative, with a negative trend line. Election years are plotted as dots, with blue dots (2006, 2008, 2018) indicating Democratic House majorities and red dots indicating Republican majorities. Both graphs demonstrate that Democrats perform better with higher turnout and more liberal positioning.
1/🧵 Following up on our study featured in NYT today, this figure provides a macro-level view:
Dem vote shares rise with turnout parity (left) but fall with party-level ideological moderation (right). This suggests mobilizing base voters > persuading swing voters by moving to the center.

A City & State New York article headline reads: "Opinion: Who's winning the battle for the left?" The subheading questions whether Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani's clear messaging will overshadow other progressive leaders like Comptroller Brad Lander, State Senators Jessica Ramos, and Zellnor Myrie. Below the text is a photograph of Zohran Mamdani speaking at a campaign event, standing at a podium with a sign reading "Zohran for New York City." He is surrounded by a diverse group of supporters holding signs with slogans such as "Freeze the Rent," "Fast & Free Buses," and "Childcare for All."
“In political campaigning, as in life, the best communicators are those who keep their message simple and consistent.”

Last year, Mayor Adams vetoed legislation to expand rental assistance.
Now we learn that homelessness is higher in NYC than in any other U.S. city, up 25% last year.
This horrifying reality is the result of sky-high housing costs and the lack of leadership from City Hall.
