finally, the remaining orgs need to evolve, e.g.:
- an expanded @CMAgovUK should organise around users, building services to improve consumer rights enforcement
- @neso_energy & new equivalents in water etc. must focus on contestability throughout the stack, not just central planning
what do we do (2)?
for safety regulators, novel technologies get stuck in limbo bc authorities are constrained by resource, rules + risk aversion
we should create a new Accelerated Innovation Agency to inject pace & urgency to regulatory pathways for frontier tech
(i.e. cut our losses on the RIO)
so what do we do (1)?
economic regulators are in a straightjacket, so we get underinvestment
it's time to scrap, split up & simplify, starting w/ @ofgem.bsky.social & @ofgem.bsky.social:
- policy β depts
- econ reg β @CMAgovUK.bsky.social ( π³π±+π¦πΊ model)
- delivery β @neso-energy.bsky.social etc
in water, despite a regulatory model promoting asset-sweating rather than building, we still lose about ~23% of our water supply every day due to leaks -- that's 5x more than NL π³π± and 3x more than GER π©πͺ
fixing that would be the equivalent of building 6 more Abingdon reservoirs
recap:
the status quo is dominated by 'just one moreism' β adding more bodies, duties, rules and conditions β rather than accelerating infra delivery
now, investor confidence is waning, the NAO say there's 'no coherent plan' for water, + the ONR act like approving only 1 reactor since 1990 is fine
new for @britishprogress.bsky.social:
a broken regulatory state has led to delayed investment, eroded state capacity, powerless politicians, zombified companies and rate-limited startups
it's time to change the model

in 5 yrs time, age might shift too; for previous 14 years young people havenβt had a Labour govt to dislike/vote against!
