Long-term flowering-time data on Japanese mountain cherry (recorded since the 9th century!) shows a shift in full-flowering date beginning in the late 19th century.

Has anyone else gotten a paper rejection with no reviewer comments? I got one Friday and a colleague got one a few weeks back. Different publishers. When he queried it he was told they couldn't find reviewers. I am waiting to hear back from my query. Is this a thing!?!?!πŸ˜‘

Unveiling the link between phytoplankton molecular physiology and biogeochemical cycling via genome-scale modeling A genome-enabled ESM built on genomic data assesses physiological acclimation and biogeochemical effects through nutrient stress.

Earth system models are plagued by uncertainties in the response of microbes to climate change. We leveraged metabolic insights from genome scale models when coupled to an ocean model in this new exciting work 🌊

Somehow this reminds me of my postdoc days at Davis where the lab on the floor above had a faulty dishwasher that flooded and came through the ceiling of our lab and the cardboard ceiling tiles where dropping out everywhere as mass panic ensued as we rushed to move seed stocks, equipment etc.😬

I have completely deleted my Duolingo. I was informed by one of my kids that the company has removed most of its employees and 70% of the company is run by AI.

I urge everyone to delete their app.

Very happy to have contributed to this article. It's a topic I am very passionate about. We need to see significantly more translational and impact from all the investments in fundamental research. It is weird that many primary publications claim a big breakthrough, and then, nothing more happens!

New preprint! We used single cell sequencing & metabolomics to look at cell type specificity of specialized metabolism in Camptotheca, the source of chemotherapeutic agent camptothecin, as well as comparative analyses w/ Catharanthus, which we previously worked on. 🧡

Here's is my experience from the financial crisis of 2008 (and Covid). Even though the whole way we are doing and funding science has changed significantly, people's shortcuts for determining whether or not you are "succeeding" will take longer to recalibrate. /1
