Australia has Monetary Sovereignty. We issue our own currency; we can never "run out" of money. But that doesn't mean we have Economic Independence.
If global supply chains break, you can't eat a spreadsheet surplus.
Tomorrow, we break down the difference.

We call ourselves the "Smart Country," yet our top 3 exports are Iron Ore, Coal, and Gas.

We aren't selling our intelligence; we are selling our dirt.

It is time to close the gap between what we know (Research) and what we do (Dig).

Smart Country, Vulnerable Economy The Translation Problem

Why doesn't excellent research lead to excellent policy in Australia?

We have a "Translation Gap."

We don't need to get "smarter." We need to fix the bridge between what we know and what we do.

Here is the blueprint πŸ‘‡ buff.ly/B9p8SgI #auspol

Do the buttons on the calculator feel like religious dogma?
Or can you see innumerable (pardon the pun) ways to use them, dogmatically and otherwise?

Check the current economic narratives, see if they feel like dogma.

It does not say just create money. Never has, never will and that would ignore endogenous processes and endogenous money (mostly bank money).

That's not what it says at all. It is a detailed examination of the operations of how money is created by the Nation State and Banks and how it flows throughout the economy and how it is destroyed. From this process it offers some insights on what can be done that is not usually offered.

All institutions are contested. I'd only say the implicit contestation of money is overlooked by those who only give conventional accounts a surface read.

Smart Country, Vulnerable Economy The Translation Problem

We invented Wi-Fi, but our policymakers still talk like we are a "banana republic" living beyond our means.
We have world-class scientists screaming about climate adaptation, while our institutions pretend disasters are just "bad luck."
It isn't incompetence; it’s a systemic trap. πŸ‘‡ buff.ly/ziDVBHq

Or you could just pay interest on reserves and never issue any more securities. No more debt.

Quickest way to get rid of national/government debt is to name it something else. Not satisfied with that? Don’t let any government agency issue securities or be named after any agency (only CBs issue & don’t call them Treasuries). Again no more debt.

I find them great as accessibility tools for myself. And not having to track down experts in their fields who never respond to emails. Guardian Australia, Crikey! and the Fabians are already good at never responding to emails, especially pitch emails sent to correct addresses.

Smart Country, Vulnerable Economy The Translation Problem

Australia ranks #3 in the world for research complexity.

Yet our economy is structurally fragile, with a 217% private debt overhang.

We are a research powerhouse trapped inside a quarry. Why doesn't our brilliance translate to resilience?

Yet our export profile looks like a developing nation: 55% rocks and gas.

How does a "smart country" build such a dumb export structure?

We have world-class climate data. We knew the Black Summer fires were coming. Yet they cost us $4.6bn in lost GDP.

Why? Because technical knowledge cannot fix an economic structure built on neglect.

You cannot have a government surplus without forcing the private sector (us) into #deficit.

Every time a politician brags about "balancing the books," they are bragging about #draining your savings account.

Stop letting them frame your #poverty as their success.
