yeah we talked a lot about how to reimagine local events by getting out of hotels and trying new venues -- making cons more like book festivals. one idea that came up a couple of times: doing cons in dead malls!

there are physical copies at the Prelinger Library, and a lot of the old issues are accessible via the Wayback Machine. but I don't believe anyone has kept an archive at a university, which is a shame

Are fan conventions doomed? NOOOOO!!! On @ouropinions.bsky.social, we talked to a ton of people who have run scifi cons and asked one burning question: how do we fix fan-run cons? Can we make them welcoming and economically sustainable, so they serve tomorrow's communities as well as today's?

You have until Sunday SUNDAY Sunday to order a Biology is Bigger than Binaries shirt. I don't have room in my house for piles of shirts so our shirts are always time-limited.

Designed by @franzanth.bsky.social, supports @skypeascientist.bsky.social, looks cool as hell.

I’m curious about people who do research professionally but who don’t have PhDs and aren’t in academia. What do you do? Where do you work? How did you get into doing it?

A witness in our case had ICE reject all her documents after using facial rec on her.

For her, tho, it seemed like nothing could make them accept that she has a right to be here.

Either way, a gov policy of not trusting gov-issued docs is going to violate lots of people's rights.

Melissa basically isn't even a hurricane anymore; it's more like an island-sized tornado. That is a legitimately terrifying concept.

Robbie the Robot

Robbie the Robot

Spent the weekend listening to @annaleen.bsky.social's Automatic Noodle, a remarkably upbeat dystopic novella set in 2064 San Francisco after California has left the US. Wholesome, amusing, and relevant, for anyone for loved Sourdough or Klara and the Sun. Humanistic sentient robots too.

Thanks for the link -- I'm totally fascinated!! Also, Cahokia was arguably egalitarian at certain points in its history. We can't be sure, but it does appear that there were really dramatic social changes that unseated the "people on top of the mound" for good.
