I've read Sedgwick's "Epistomology of the Closet" and "Between Men" but I didn't know she was rivals with anyone.

My cats like to jump on my shoulder and stick their butts in my face. Which I realize they mean in a friendly way, but I am too much of a homo sapiens to enjoy it.

Sedgwick’s prescription is β€œreparative reading,” a theory of more flexible sense-making that can hold truth and provide an antidote to the overwhelming paranoia of our times. While the conventional wisdom states, β€œJust because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean you don’t have enemies,” Sedgwick turns this formula on its head: β€œJust because you have enemies doesn’t mean you have to be paranoid.” Or to put it another way, having a direct understanding of systemic oppression (the healthcare system, police violence, the fascist state) does not condemn a person to a categorically paranoid point of view. To practice a worldview more expansive and more open to possibilities than paranoia does not mean you have to deny the reality or gravity of oppression.

Feeling paranoid about stochastic violence and weaponized media? Me too. That's why I can't stop thinking about this incredibly helpful essay by @littlewow.online in @flaminghydra.com about the idea of "reparative reading" as a corrective to the "paranoid style." flaminghydra.com/issue-511/

So sick of everyone complaining about copper. How about the ridiculous prices on purple dye? What -- are there limits to how many shellfish you can harvest? Huh?

There is no way we are cool enough to be Phoenicians. More like the ruling class at Knossos.

Amateurs think about the Roman Empire. Pros think about the Bronze Age city states.

Dan Simmons, noted racist, has died. He wrote Hyperion, which contained a good short story and then a lot of other words, which many of us read anyway because it was the Nineties and Waldenbooks had a limited science fiction section.

Americans are often shocked when I tell them that according to every single Arab Barometer poll issued, which tracks opinion across almost all of the Arab majority states, the US is consistently listed as the number one threat and impediment to regional stability.
