Anyone Else Have Those Weird Dreams Where Sobbing Future Generations Beg You To Change Course? The human subconscious is such an interesting thing. No matter how much you think you’ve got it figured out, it’ll always spit out the most random stuff. Take me, for example. After coming home from a...

When I lived in Germany I had an American friend visit and seeing a German sign for "Exit" on the Autobahn ("Ausfahrt") he was like "huh huh ass fart" for the rest of his stay.

Treatable but not curable applies to a bunch of cancers I think that don't have to be life threatening! My dad has prostate cancer and the line they kept telling him was "it's the kind of cancer you die with but not of". Hoping it's something like that.

Fuck cancer

I just looked up how many of those the US has because I figured this must be a big percentage and... the US has around 400 of these giant flying refuel planes? Wtf?

Marathon: Social – DanielZKlein

I've played a fair bit of Marathon over the weekend and I regrettably had thoughts. Had to exorcise them into a blog post so they'd leave me be:

And you’re telling me we get one of these for free every day?

Unfortunately that means β€œautopsy”. It can mean section in the context of an organization but I was talking about a physical container.

Also I forgot how to say β€œpurr” in German the other day. (β€œSchnurren”) what would I do without the internet? (Own a physical dictionary, probably)

A false friend in language acquisition is a pair of words that sound similar but have in fact quite different meanings. I just almost fell for one in a message to my mum. I wanted to say the English word β€œsection” (as in a physical sub division of something) and I almost used German β€œSektion”.

It is so strange to have lived entirely in one language (German) for the first two and a half decades of my life and to then switch to completely living in English. I can no longer tell when my intuition for German is right and when it is a β€œfalse friend” the other way around.

That's it. I just wanted to send you a few words of appreciation. This will be one of those books I revisit for sure (I'm kind of thinking of the two books as one, having read them with no pause in between). Thank you! It's such beautiful work and did such things to my mind.

Phrases of your unusually beautiful prose (and poetry I guess!) linger in my mind still; from epithets like "the edge-shine of a knife" to "released, I am a spear in the hands of the sun" (goosebumps). I still wonder if Nineteen Adze knew Eight Antidote would intercept her order... aaah!

I devoured the duology in two days and I couldn't have loved it more. The prose! The linguistics! The poetry, and the world building that gave me an empire that filters conquest and belonging through the lens of literature, which I guess they all do?

@byzantienne.bsky.social Hi hello! I attempted to read "A Memory Called Empire" in 2020 and bounced off it a few chapters in. People have continued to sing its praises and I thought I'd try again, and really I want to know what was wrong with my brain in 2020 (I have a theory).
