Macro photo of a brown stink bug in face view on a leaf, guarding a tightly-clustered bunch of eggs that are shaped and colored exactly like a full tray of dark beer with foam on top.

Finally, the bug is back with a round of the Guinness.

The photo shows four images of the same Roman iron stylus (pen) one below the other, with knib to the left. This stylus is octagonal in shape, with an inscription dot-punched along its length on four alternate sides. The stylus is 132 mm long and 5 mm thick, and the letters are circa 2 mm high. The four images of the pen show the four lines of inscribed text (highlighted) which read:

β€˜ab urbe v[e]n[i] munus tibi gratum adf(e)ro
acul[eat]um ut habe[a]s memor[ia]m nostra(m)
rogo si fortuna dar[e]t quo possem
largius ut longa via ceu sacculus est (v)acuus’

Translated as

β€˜I have come from the City. I bring you a welcome gift
with a sharp point that you may remember me.
I ask, if fortune allowed, that I might be able (to give)
as generously as the way is long (and) as my purse is empty.’

This inscription is generally interpreted by scholars as a humorous, tongue-in-cheek acknowledgment by the giver of the cheapness of the gift.

The pen was used to write on wax-filled wooden writing tablets. Found in London (Roman β€˜Londinium’) by MOLA, during excavations for Bloomberg’s European Headquarters in 2010–2014 . Photo by Juan Jose Fuldain for MOLA

Timeless humour!

A 2,000 year-old Roman souvenir pen with a joke inscription roughly equivalent to:

β€œI went to Rome and all I got you was this cheap pen!" πŸ˜‚

Dated circa 70 AD, this iron stylus pen was recovered in London during excavations by MOLA. πŸ“· Juan Jose Fuldain/MOLA

I just want to see some of the really huge sprinters on a BMX bike trying to do a pump track :). And fairly certain MVDP would ace the bike trials.

Would love to see the roadies do both a BMX race and a bike trials course.

I mean, Worst Dinner Party ever but nearly everyone died, so yes. There are so many WDPE and I can barely remember them. Still in GoT, Joffrey died at his own wedding reception but that was pretty awesome, so doesn’t make it, I think. Rocky Horror where they ate Eddie… right up there.

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

The Magritte exhibition I saw recently was wonderful for that. Painting gorgeous surrealist masterpieces while living under Nazi occupation. It was a fabulous act of joy and defiance in a dangerous world (also, the forging, but he had to make cash somehow).

I have been making an effort to find and collect all of Goobalathaldin’s books, because I loved them as a child. Best intro to First Nations stories I could have had. They are absolutely worth tracking down. Also, David Unaipon’s Legendary Tales (reclaimed from the white guy who stole them).

Being a journalist is sick: I just contacted a pre-eminent jaguar conservationist in Argentine with a question that has been weighing on me for ages and he wrote back right away with an informed answer.
