The New America: Federal (ICE) Agents Boarding Trains? By Judith Roberts * As an attorney I’m deeply alarmed by an incident that occurred just this week and feel compelled to share itβ€”to raise aw...

A co-worker of mine (who is a judge), traveled by train from Montana to North Dakota for work this week. The train made a stop in Havre, MT, where ICE agentsβ€”armed and dressed in full military-style tactical gearβ€”boarded the train.

Say all this to say, now that we know they don’t know what the heck they’re doing, and we’re seeing multiple fault lines and factions among the capitalist class we have to be smart about understanding what’s happening, find the wedges to drive change, & communicate to people they *must* take charge.

Another free idea for library friends: organize a historical walking tour of your neighborhood. You can include the history of your library system and how it was founded/funded in the walk. Collect donations from attendees and end at a cafe/bar that donates $1 for each drink sold to the library.

Marginalized People Were Detained Unlawfully, Report Says | The Tyee The Adult Guardianship Act has been used to hold 300 people in the last five years.

B.C. has been illegally detaining some of the province’s most marginalized people using a law that doesn’t actually permit that practice, says British Columbia Humans Rights Commissioner Kasari Govender.

The existence of definitive empirical studies showing that the nativist narrative is dead wrong hasn’t slowed the spread of the lies… but erasing the studies themselves is another step toward full fascism

Students removed for using political voice or being associated with protests β€” These are the most visible and obviously political cases, raising troubling issues about free speech. This includes Mahmoud Khalil, a former student who was a visible figure in protests in Columbia, Badar Khan Suri, an Indian scholar at Georgetown University whose studies peacebuilding, and or Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish PhD student at Tufts co-wrote an op-ed in a student newspaper opposing the war in Gaza.

Students removed for minor infractions with the law β€” This is likely the majority of cases, but Rubio does not mention them. Here, students removed not for political voice, but for low-level engagements with law enforcement. Dozens of students reported that their visas were revoked for traffic violations, such as speeding. One immigration lawyer said: β€œThis is totally unprecedented…A brush with law enforcement that didn’t necessarily result in an arrest or a conviction is all it took.” Her client had a DUI from a decade ago, which he disclosed when applying for a new visa, which was approved. But now that visa has been revoked. Another immigration lawyer spoke to a woman who had been arrested when a man assaulted her; police subsequently acknowledged she was the victim, but her visa was terminated anyway.

There are basically two groups of students being deported:
a) those who have engaged in political speech, which has gotten the most attention;
b) those who have had minor infractions with the law like a speeding ticket, which is likely the larger group.

United States is no longer a safe destination for international students Abductions, deportations and fear define campus life for many foreign students in Trump’s America.

"A precedent has been set. Every international student in America today must accept that they may be abducted, detained and deported for attending a protest or expressing a view that upsets the White House or its allies."
