Hey Im really bad at self-promoting but The Extended Universe is out in a month and a half and if you havent pre-ordered it yet and want to support my work this is a really good way to do it!

My long-time internet buddy Liz has just put out a really sick new album, full of tumbling abstractions of shredded post-indie pop collage and (the highlight for me) some extensive ambient sections full of waves of shifting colors and delicate arrangements. It's awesome, support her!!

also without context i'm somehow guessing this is about Super Mario World, which has a truly grotesque level of secrets. which is the best thing about the game for me.

What's scary about this story is the surveillance it hints at. This trans woman had changed her name, legally, but chose not to change her gender marker. She was apparently flagged in the DMV system as trans and her license was invalidated under a law that supposedly only concerned gender markers.

the effect of coming back into a conversation that is ever more insular, self-referential, intense and moving at warp speed is that it appears to the outsider like everyone's unhinged, even if the conversation makes perfect sense & is rational to the participants. feel like that cant be a good thing

had a death in the family and was almost completely off the internet for a few days & my observation is that there is too much happening too fast such that basic facts abt the world are difficult to ascertain unless you are mainlining info all the time & doing that seems to drive people insane

Candace Owens i can imagine just becoming like a more generic new agey conspiracy theory grifter person and Fuentes becoming like some kind of Bill Maher type except more antisemitic

not saying we'll see any less antisemitism, misogyny, etc from them. but we're going to see how hollow the far right media ecosystem really is when the current administration collapses and some of these people scramble to try and rebrand themselves.

would not be shocked if Fuentes and Candace Owens et al pivot to a more ideologically ambiguous generic "political commentator" role in the future because they are fundamentally grifters lacking a real core being and they know credulous libs will accept them into the fold basically no matter what

this is important for both the obvious reasons (it's illegal under state law and should be enforced regardless of any other reason) and also that it sets a precedent - because if this doesn't happen in NY it probably wasn't going to happen anywhere else.

a lot of people's belief is "the New York Times is important, and i am/want to be important, so therefore i deserve to be at the New York Times" and there's no process of interrogation of what compromises you're making by doing that. and they get annoyed by the idea that there ever would be

dunno if it's just me internalizing peak "sell out" discourse or being into adbusters shit growing up, but i always intuitively recognized that being a part of any big storied institution involves making a deal with the devil at some point down the line. but many people refuse to ever accept that?

this is what the New York Times is, and has always been. the NYT might be other things for other people too, and you might not be directly responsible for the malignant consent manufacturing machine. but if you're a public figure associated with them, you deserve scrutiny for it just by default.

the people who write for NYT and other outlets like it complaining about being criticized on here for being a part of malignant consent manufacturing institutions with massive anti-trans, pro-Israel bias like this baffle me. putting aside that no one is entitled to a job: this what you signed up for

it feels like the entire worldview of this cohort could be boiled down to the idea that consequences never exist as long as whatever happens is something they agree with. things just happen, and then other things happen, and those things are never connected to or in response to each other.

This is bad news for everyone in the South, and really bad news for low-income trans folks. The surgeons getting pushed out of university hospitals will move to private practice and while SOME people will still get trans surgeries covered by insurance, those on Medicaid won’t.
