New PhD student was visiting my lab in Spain and asked me if we have summers off. I was confused... like no, honey, this is academia we don't have any time off. And then my colleague was like:

"You are in Europe now. We do not work in August. Everything is closed."

Got an email rejection from a climate justice job and they CC'd 100s of other rejectees... so now there is a cursed email thread with everyone sharing their LinkedIns and trying to network

Of all the departures this past year at NOAA—via the fork offer, retirements, etc.— the one that stung the most was the firing of people in their probationary first year. They have more modern skills than those of us who received their PhDs in the 90s and 00s. My whole department is in its 50s now.
