It's honestly impressive how infuriating to use OneLan digital signage is. Forget user-friendliness, this is user antagonism

Please buy books that are coming out this year.

Doesn’t have to be mine. But there is a stellar release calendar this year especially of Black writers and it would be a shame if one of the fascist victories was people not buying those books (from the indies that are in the fight with us). #BookSky

@chemrxiv.org Is there an RSS feed for the new host? I can't seem to find one via Feedly or the new site.

(sorry for the double post, wasn't sure which platform was checked more often)

Similarly, I love showing my students how to liquid load with it and showing them how you can check your packing/band thickness by watching the little translucent band spread as you push it through your Hx/EA column.

We used it once for a chromatography of spinach pigments demo for the orgo labs when I was an undergrad! Definitely leaves an impact seeing basically "floating" red, orange, green, and blue bands!

I have a single 4L of CHCl3, basically only really use it for liquid loading annoying compounds for columns or chasing off last bits of other solvents before a final high vac excursion.

At least with the EtOH stabilized stuff you can wash with water and then dry/distill. The amylenes on the other hand linger like the glitter after a birthday party for a 6 year old.

I def see much more CCl4 in modern stuff from πŸ‡·πŸ‡Ί than I do EU, US, CAN, JPN, or even CN!

Read one paper from I think last year that was azeotropically drying with it. Completely alien to me since it's been so regulated my entire life lol.

@barneygrubbs.bsky.social raised that it is probably a recycling GPC! So probably doesn't use that much all said!

Plus, when we talk about black-body radiation, we get to talk about the ultraviolet catastrophe, which I'm adamant should be a band name if it isn't already. Share your frustration, Chanda!! Ugh

Black-body radiation - Wikipedia

Black-body radiation is something we’ve understood for over a century, I teach it in my undergrad astrophysics classes, and it’s how the quantum revolution kicked off en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black-b...

Prep HPLC I've done once! Prep GPC sounds wild. I always am a bit agog when I read like JACS from the 50s-60s where they do prep GC (often annotated as VPC/GLC). Never seen one in action but I picture like a little nozzle just spritzing into a collection bottle lol.

I have seen it one other time....also for like a C-H borylation/silylation system. I do wonder if it's specifically because the pdts are so friggin non-polar and have big volume due to the Bpin/etc.... regardless it def has me scratching my head

"Gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) was performed on SHIMADZU LC-20A equipped with FP-2002 columns."

Guessing they must have it rigged up to a fraction collector or something which threw me

28.01.2026 02:44 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

Right! That's my usual inkling when I think GPC, but so far as I can tell after some more digging, the paper I'm looking at is using a polystyrene/DVB column on a Shimadzu and def purifying small molecules. ex. "compound xx was purified via GPC using CHCl3 as solvent"

28.01.2026 02:41 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Hmmm. I guess they must just hook up a GPC column to a standard pump/detector rig and fraction collector.... Always cool/unsettling when you come across a new preparative purification technique you feel like you should have had a handle on

28.01.2026 02:36 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Like....it's gotta be on an instrument right? Not a manual technique

28.01.2026 01:54 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

Potentially ignorant question: When a small molecule synthesis paper mentions using "GPC" for purification....what does that mean operationally? GPC immediately is like neon sign for POLYMERS and ANALYTICAL in my head. #chemsky
