In your case, you'd want to do it and then register the old handle again as a new account so you don't get anybody trying to claim it for themselves. Then just note this is a defiunct handle and give the new one.

Yup, works fine. Took me maybe 30 seconds. You'll notice that the earlier messages between us from this account all show the new handle based off a domain name, and that you're following this newly named account.
