Of course individual differences will matter and ymmv depending on them. Bottom line, reading is always better than not reading so if scrolling on a smartphone is how you can get your reading in, keep doing it!

Ultimately reading paginated text from a tablet appears to be the best form of digital reading for comprehension and scrolling on a smartphone (which is unfortunately how a lot of us get information due to convenience) is the worst.

But there are hefty effects when scrolling is necessary to read all of the text. Why so troublesome? Probably due to the "place on the page" effect where it's hard to track and remember where text was. Looking back to reread is much harder when the text is continuously moving from scrolling.

Scrolling matters too. There were no reliable differences between paper and any digital devices when scrolling was not necessary (either paginated text that is swiped to change or the text was short enough for a single screen/page of paper).

Not all handheld devices are alike. Reading from a tablet is not significantly different from reading from paper. But reading from a smartphone DOES yield worse comprehension outcomes than paper.

All screen reading is not equal--comprehension varies tremendously by device and whether or not scrolling is necessary. This is what we found in a synthesis of 56 different studies on comprehension from paper versus various digital devices.
