For the next few days I’ll be periodically updating everyone on the Hong Kong 4 Trails Ultra Challenge #HK4TUC. For 2025 there will be 15 participants. It’ll start when organizer Andre Blumberg says so, with 6 hours’ warning. There will be live tracking, but for now a primer:

Fans of Guangzhou FC (formerly Evergrande) showed their dissatisfaction at the recent Guangdong-HK Cup at Hong Kong Stadium, following the recent decision by the CFA to deny their club license. The same banners appeared 1 week earlier at Yuexiu Stadium in Guangzhou.

Meanwhile, funding of niche programs is called out for not having a big enough market. And based on all the policy announcements, it appears that “mega events” have just been invented in 2024.

HK’s micromanagement of public space has for long been a major hurdle for sustainable bottom up culture to flourish. It’s kind of ironic how govt is lamenting the need to attract tourists, if they actively suppress the “edge” that is wanted nowadays. Hawkers, cyclists, surfers, artists, buskers…
18.11.2024 15:25 — 👍 9 🔁 5 💬 0 📌 1A 19-year-old in HK was charged with one count of "insulting the national anthem". He will appear in the Eastern Magistrates' Courts next Tuesday. The incident happened during the "World Cup Asian Qualifiers" match between Hong Kong and Iran in June.
13.11.2024 04:30 — 👍 2 🔁 2 💬 1 📌 2The more you dive deeper into the Tatler failure, the more hilarious it gets. Apparently they even attributed quotes to wrong players. Chan Shinichi, who is quoted here of having missed out the Messi game in 2014 due to leg injury, was born in 2002.
08.02.2024 06:40 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Essentially this also rendered the game meaningless from a sporting perspective: Inter Miami couldn’t practice against a cohesive team, no collective learning experience for a local side; probably another reason why the game wasn’t taken too seriously when compared to Vissel Kobe
08.02.2024 06:39 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I am not saying they shouldn’t have fielded a League XI. My issue is with how they were pushing for it to look like it is the HK Team (even down to the name and logo). Can’t imagine that @andersen_jrn was particularly happy about that as well
08.02.2024 06:39 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Among the 25 people in the squad, less than half held a HKSAR passport and would be eligible to play for Hong Kong. Just 6 of them were in the recent HKFA senior squad (Gerbig, Philip Chan, Yapp, Tse Ka-wing, Everton, Li Ngai-hoi)
08.02.2024 06:38 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0In their ads, Tatler pushed the idea it would be indeed the representative team playing, when it was neither the A team nor the B team (which would take part in Guangdong-HK Cu). It should have been framed as what it is: A HKPL League XI, similar to other games in the past
08.02.2024 06:38 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0There was long little enthusiasm from HKFA and the league about that game, knowing it would fall into a packed schedule. Clubs wouldn’t want their players get injured in an essentially meaningless exhibition game, and the HK team just finished an exhausting Asian Cup campaign.
08.02.2024 06:36 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0One thing that still bothers me the most is how Tatler was misleading the public with false advertising that Inter Miami would actually be playing against the Hong Kong Representative Team.
A thread.
