While many birds are just starting to think about spring, Great Horned Owls are already nesting. Females incubate eggs in mid/late winter, often reusing old hawk, crow, or heron nests. By late winter, fluffy white owlets peek over the edge completely dependent on both parents for warmth and food.

It’s the time of year that birders affectionately refer to as Weird Duck Season. Ducks that breed far north make their way here during the winter so there’s generally a more interesting variety of ducks to see. Add in hybrids & sea ducks, & every outing turns into a refresher course on ducks.

🎢 We like duck butts and we cannot lie and you other birders can’t deny! 🎢

Dabbling ducks use this feeding strategy to munch on aquatic plants, seeds, & invertebrates - their bills are equipped with tiny ridges called lamellae, which work like a strainer. Pretty efficient and no diving required!πŸ™Œ

If you spot two male Northern Flickers facing off, bills raised and calling β€œwicka,” you’re seeing their famous wicka dance! This flashy display helps them defend territory and sometimes impress a nearby female. Most duels end peacefully when one flicker outdances the other winning the territory.
