1. Tomorrow's my birthday and here's a gift you can get for me: Buy a small creator's work. Local band, indie writer, up-and-coming visual artist, that crafter down the street, or whomever. Your support matters to them, especially in this economic/social environment. And you deserve some joy, too.

Woodfired teapot with circular lines across the body, lid and spout. The handle also has a strong twist to it. There is a nice variation in color in the tan, red and yellow ash glaze that built up on the surface as it was fired. Overall the exterior has a light sheen to it.

My prediction for these local elections: a significant number of Reform candidates will be suspended for some sort of nonce related activity.

This is one of the reasons I'm still uncommitted to this space. It feels so disconnected from reality. It's just a bit too cosy when the world is burning as hard as it is.

Excuse the hasty photos but I am really pleased with how this big pot (utensil holder?) came out. Itโ€™s about 6.5โ€ tall and feels just right for the task.

Screenshot of a single question and answer from interview in the Times Literary Supplement with Ursula K. Le Guin. Here is the quote:

If you could make a change to anything youโ€™ve written over the years, what would it be?

In The Dispossessed, I would mention the communal pickle barrels at street corners in the big towns, restocked by whoever in the community has made or kept more pickles than they need. I knew about the free pickles all along, but never could fit them into the book.

Bees play a critical role in U.S. food production. In addition to making honey, they pollinate 75% of the fruits, nuts and vegetables grown in the U.S.
That's $15 billion worth of crops. Shook said the current losses are unsustainable.
"If this is a multi-year thing, it'll change the way we consume food in the United States," Shook said. "If we lose 80% of our bees every year, the industry cannot survive, which means we cannot pollinate at the scale that we need to produce food in the United States."

Hundreds of millions of bees, almost 80% of bees in the US, have died over he past eight months. Researchers don't know why.

Here is what this means:

Ceramic history. Spain. Tin-glazed plate with bird. Barcelona. 17th-18th c. Such nice mark quality. Majolica (tin-glaze) decoration is done on top of the raw glaze, so it's like doing water color on blotter paper. One chance. Bold marks are good.

A cardboard box colored with black sharpie and watercolor paint to look like a living room. There are little paintings all over the wall that have been drawn by a child. There is an open green door cut into the back of the box. A small black, white, and gray bird has landed inside to eat the birdseed on the floor.

When we had to quarantine at the start of the pandemic in 2020, my 5-yr-old and I used to turn boxes into rooms and tape them to the outside of our window. Then we would put birdseed on the floor and sit and wait for birds to visit. Hereโ€™s our very first visitor โ€” a chickadee! #FebruARTy #ArtYear

Question for fellow potters, does anyone have any tips to stop hand cramping while carving? I can only carve about four pieces before my hands start cramping and my forearm pain comes around.

I also can hyperextend, which causes even more pain. Big hands and small tools arenโ€™t ergonomic.
