Overshooting 1.5 degrees and 2.0 degrees is terrible. But we don't give up. EVERY TENTH OF A DEGREE IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR. Any warming we can avoid means less human suffering.

I wanted to offer some thoughts on the Gates climate memo that has been circulating this week. While I can't directly speak for others, I can say that my own response is one of dismay & deep frustration (and that this view is shared by many climate/Earth scientists). [1/n]

Every 1/10th of a degree of warming we prevent is a profound gift to our children & grandchildren, and to their children & grandchildren. We should aim to prevent as much warming as possible AND improve the lives of everyone alive today through poverty alleviation & better health. Walk + chew gum.

They want us to think concern about climate change is a radical, fringe view. They want us to feel isolated. The truth is that we are the majority.

I really expected to be hearing a lot less about coal by now.

This morning, Mayor Sutcliffe held a press conference outlining the modified Lansdowne 2.0 recommendations before city councillors or the public had access to them. That’s unacceptable. Transparency and respect for Council should come before media rollouts.

Why spend three billion dollars decarbonizing the grid today when you can spend $30 billion over the next decade, create a potentially volatile threat to all human and animal life, and burn nothing but fossil fuels until then?
