Like so many other times, I recall Rian Johnson talking about The Last Jedi -- "the best thing to give your characters is bad news." Rey is no one and comes from nothing, the one thing she didn't want to hear. That is also not "subversion of expectations." it is "good writing."

I see this so much in the wannabe creatives who fanfic'd and online'd themselves into thinking everything has to respond to twitter criticism. Subversion is a specific thing with a deliberate intent, it's not "deliberately fucking with the reader's expectations," that is called "writing."

also it is extremely well known and common argument online to say "oh sure, turn away from the violence, just like you always do" and the person in question is just some twitter account that is doing active psychic harm to themselves. if they're not saying that then they should understand it happens

a while ago I wanted to make an entire article about taking a stand against "Subversion" but I think I can just sum it up by saying "It's okay for the thing you like to be 'a good one of those,' it doesn't need to shatter the mold to qualify as Objectively Good."

Yeah ime Eva has a lot of really smart "what if" rotations (hothead lead being swapped with soft demure DLI, the monstrous hero creature fighting the sleek and square aliens, etc) but it's so American to watch two shows and declare one a subversion

I heard "Eva is a deconstruction of Gundam anime, what if the hero DIDN'T want to pilot the robot" for like twenty years and then I watch the first Gundam anime and it's like "Amuro is terrified, confused, barely pulls it together with luck and superior tech, and tries to quit multiple times."
