As someone who has paid close attention to housing policy for the past two decades, something jumped out when I was reading Deena Winter's profile of Frey before the election ("Can Jacob Frey triumph over his critics one more time?" Oct. 25). The article claimed one of Frey's wins was that the number of affordable units built annually in the city had "nearly
tripled" from 2018 to 2022. This choice of years seemed odd to me given that it's now 2025, so 1 dug a little deeper into the city's official reports on this issue, which are titled "The
Way Home."
2018 saw 593 affordable units closed, 2022 had 919. How could that be considered a "tripling" in any sense? Well, it turns out some misleading math was
deployed here.

Instead of comparing 2018 to 2022 directly, the average from 2011-2018 was used, needlessly dragging down the baseline with years where we were still recovering from the housing crisis.
On top of that, by choosing the 919 units in 2022 as the endpoint, this talking point conveniently leaves out that 2023-24 only saw 992 units combined - for an annual average of 496 affordable units closed.
Instead of our current state of affordable housing production being a near-tripling of 2018, we have seen a 16% decline.
We should absolutely celebrate wins when they happen, but misrepresenting data to turn clear struggles into victory laps does a disservice to all of us still focused on finding solutions.

the Strib (finally) published my correction of some funky Frey housing math that was featured in Deena’s profile of him pre-election. better late than never, i suppose

@barnesandnoble.com at Har Mar has their gate locked to the rest of the mall. Such a strange place.

I hadn't been here in a few years but back when I lived in roseville they didn't do this. Very irritating to try going to the store from the mall side but realize they lock it.

I hope you're not implying that Mayor Frey faked a street reopening for politics a few days before an election.

there’s quite literally no purpose in continuing to pay taxes if they’re going to weaponize them against a majority of people paying them like this

How about just abolish ice? It is still a new agency and has proven harmful for the entire time it has been around.

Looking like voters may have to defeat this charter amendment whenever it arrives on our ballots. I'm waiting for someone to point to specific examples of a confirmation process that went off the rails because too much scrutiny was applied. Most confirmations are quiet and non-controversial.

Something needs to be done. The charter commission has more long term power than our electeds.

Meanwhile charter commissioners have zero expertise and are not subject area experts in good governance.

This really makes it sound like a Border Patrol agent tried to kill an anti-ICE activist in Chicago and DHS lied to cover for him

@iamvirgo.bsky.social is going after the Minneapolis dfl in retribution for being called out for corruption. You clearly don't care if you destroy this party. You just want to punish Minneapolis for going against frey and for pointing out your major conflicts of interest.

You think more than a few people have a ui that is noticeably different than pre musk twitter?

It is weird how defensive you are. Even the bluesky people had been treating this as twitter 2.0 in their marketing to get users here

I don't know where this revisionism has come from about the suffragettes - people saying "if the suffragettes were around today, they'd be considered terrorists."

The suffragettes were arrested and tortured, sexually assaulted and beaten by the state. They *were* considered terrorists!

04.10.2025 15:49 β€” πŸ‘ 3226    πŸ” 913    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It doesn't take much to see that the user experience is virtually identical to twitter. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. It just is what it is.

04.10.2025 22:47 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yes. And like I said, as a regular user that means nothing to me. I don't care about the internals behind my twitter 2.0. And most people don't, it only matters in weird techbro bubbles.

04.10.2025 20:09 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

And what does at proto have to do with me? Nothing. It doesn't matter to me what the internal workings of this app are.

04.10.2025 19:58 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

And I think that a lot of techbro types just don't understand things if they see bluesky as something other than just a different twitter.

04.10.2025 19:15 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Users don't know or care about internals. If it looks, feels, and operates like twitter then it is seen as basically the same as twitter. Largely because it was branded as being old twitter.

04.10.2025 19:14 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It also feels the same because the branded themselves as being basically twitter with a nearly identical ui.

Why Did DHS Send a Russian Exile to Costa Rica? The Trump administration has sent thousands of people to places other than their countries of origin β€” also known as third countries. Months after being deported, one such Russian family has been forced to rebuild its life in Monteverde.

The Trump administration has completely ended all pathways to seek asylum, a legal right for more than half a century.

We took the government to court and won, and they're now appealing. We won't abandon our commitment to people fleeing danger.
