Beautiful vibrant yellow dog’s tooth violets are growing in the grass. I’m down at their level to take the photo so we’re looking through them. There are eight flower heads tumbling over each other as they reach up to the light. Beyond them a little way in the distance are mature trees.

His left arm is at his side. He wears a Canotier, the traditional straw hat. His passenger is using his mobile phone to take a photograph of him as I am taking a photograph of them.

What we see here is an ancient mural on a wall in a Tuscan village. Because it’s so precious it is preserved behind a glass window. The window allows you to view the mural but it also reflects the surrounding environment so to photograph both mural and reflections and I quite like the effect.

A landscape oriented image of a bleak winter day in the Peak District. It’s snowing heavily but I was having to use a fast shutter speed as the wind was buffeting both me and my tripod so you can’t see the falling flakes. In the foreground to the right are some large granite rocks that are not snow laden so they stand out. Beyond them the snow covered mound of Higger Tor looms, beyond that we see nothing as the snow and mist has reduced visibility to a matter of metres.

Lights are pinging starbursts, glowing in the dark and reflecting on the water. The clouds in the sky are blurred from the long exposure and the sea, already calm in the harbour, is stilled further.

A song thrush perch on the side of the birdbath in my garden. It’s taking down a beak of water and so has its head up in the air. The sun is shining on its front making its beautiful arrowhead markings on its chest pop. The foliage backdrop is defused owing to a narrow depth of field.

The river Derwent flows through Chatsworth Park and that is what we see here. It enters the frame on the right and leaves on the left. It was an extremely misty day and all we can see are three old timer trees placed on the second bottom right third and another group of trees over on the extreme left right next to the river quite shrouded in the mist. All the trees reflect in the water. The old timer trees are no longer there. I think they became a danger to the public so had to be felled. So sad as they were lovely specimens.

If I remember correctly this was taken in the Princess of Wales Conservatory at Kew Gardens. We are looking at a pond on which small plants have been arranged to look like a large flower floating on the surface. Above hang two large baskets both overflowing with tropical blooms. Above is the greenhouse roof and it is also reflected in the water.

Or does it….. actually it’s a round light suspended from an arch that is not in the frame. I’ve cheated a little by cloning out the light’s fixing so it appears to be floating freely. The image is in monochrome as I felt it suited it.

A landscape oriented image taken from a vaperetto in Venice. We were on our to visit the Lido when we spotted a dolphin swimming in Venice Basin, that wasn’t something we expected to see but one we were delighted to encounter. The bottom two thirds of the image are water, the dolphin is slightly to the right on the first third. Sadly I only got its middle, both head and tail are in the water. La Salute sits central on the horizon with a nice cloud filled sky behind.

A scene from one of the feeders in my garden. It holds sunflower hearts and has had a lot of interest from the local siskin and redpoll just recently. In this image one siskin is sate on the feeder and another on a twiggy branch close by. A redpoll has been bullied off by them and is exiting the frame in a swooping downward dive with its wings outstretched.

Deborah Devonshire who was the youngest of the Mitford sisters, the older ones being known for various exploits some of which scandalised society in the 1940s. Deborah married Andrew Cavendish in 1941, who at the time was the second son of, but his elder brother was killed in the Second World War and so Andrew became heir and eventually he and Deborah became Duke and Duchess of Chatsworth. Deborah was a very astute businesswomen and takes huge credit for commercial success of Chatsworth today, especially after the huge death duties incurred on the death of her husband’s father that at the time threatened to see it broken up.
