Lewis wasn't the most gifted writer, but he understood the capacity for darkness, hypocrisy, mean-spirited jealousy etc in humans better than most writers, and his body of work is flawed but almost brilliant. I read it as a teen in the 80s and a couple of times since. Doremus is a great character.
