i had never examined the “perfect victim” trope before reading this book and as it progresses, I am realizing just how many of these tropes exist in True Crime/Mystery. It’s a very good example of the trope, and it’s been interesting seeing it develop

I appreciated the reference to the biblical King Saul in Kayden’s catalyst. His obsession with outward appearance, pride, and greed leads to not only his death, but the death of his three sons. I am interested to see any further allusions to K.Saul’s demise in Freshwater as we go on!

at first, I didn’t think that Rosaleen had lied about the manna to continue the “scam”. It seemed like a desperate fib a mother told her daughter and was the only way Anna would get any sustenance at all.

I think Lib has this realization throughout her fascination with Anna, and how Anna declined. The complexity of this child does not negate her need for nurturing.

It seems like Lib is nearing an obsessive place herself with the lack of time she’s actually spending on replenishing her own needs (sleep, eating, etc.) I am noticing a growing trend in her compulsively thinking about eating, feeling nauseous, and others observing her outward decline

Lib’s constant shock around Anna is so frustrating. She really truly just does not understand this girl, and it seems to fascinate her (but she won’t listen)!

I really loved this quote; constructionist feminist epistemologies really resonate with me. The “docile body” in question relates to the idea that gender (&genderperformance) is rooted in the social standards at that time and dependent on that rather than biological sex (“craving..”).

“Pious gimcrackery: a set of rosary beads made of -seeds, was it?- with a plain cross on the end…Virgin and Child.” I really liked this imagery, and Anna’s relationship with religion throughout it all is intriguing to me
