UPDATE: Staff at the ICE concentration camp in Dilley, Texas have begun raiding the dormitories of kids and their parents to confiscate and destroy letters from the children. This is in response to the ace reporting by @micarosenberg et al for ProPublica:

Authoritarians use performative lying to mark who is for, and more importantly, against their regimes.

The point isn’t determining truth. The point is creating an ingroup whose loyalty is assured through ritually denying reality and an easily recognizable outgroup that refuses the delusion.

It's hard to find the right words for this level of absurdity, but this is how intense anti-Palestinian (and anti-Arab) racism is in the United States, all under the guise of philosemitism but often at the expense of Jewish students.

At least one other boat, the one with the Colombian fisherman, was adrift and displaying a distress signal with its engine out of the water. To attack a disabled vessel in distress and signaling for assistance is basically in the same category as killing shipwrecked survivors clinging to wreckage.
