The U.S. Supreme Court has officially denied Kim Davis’s appeal, ending her years-long fight against same-sex marriage rights. Davis, a former Kentucky county clerk, became known in 2015 when she refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples after the Supreme Court legalized same sex marriage in Obergefell v. Hodges. By refusing, she violated the couples’ constitutional rights and was later ordered by a jury to pay damages. Davis asked the Supreme Court to not only overturn that ruling (pay your own damn bills lady) but also reconsider the national legalization of same-sex marriage reaching unprecedented Karen levels. Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has named veteran budget official Dean Fuleihan as New York City’s First Deputy Mayor. The announcement took place at Roosevelt House on the Upper East Side, the same historic site where Franklin D. Roosevelt conducted his own transition to the presidency in 1932. Fuleihan served as the city’s Budget Director from 2014 to 2017 and First Deputy Mayor from 2018 to 2021. After more than a month of a government shutdown, the Senate voted 60–40 to move forward with a bill to reopen the government. The deal passed with help from eight Democrats who joined Republicans, while Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer voted against it. Schumer had pushed for the deal to include an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies, but that was dropped from the final version. Younger voters were initially outnumbered in the first few days but surged late in the weekend with more than 100,000 voters under the age of 35 casting ballots from Friday through Sunday. Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s name appears in a contact list linked to Jeffrey Epstein, according to several media reports. According to a recent New York Times article, FBI Director Kash Patel was alarmed that the Director of Counterterrorism, Joe Kent, had accessed files pertaining to the Charlie Kirk assassination. The files in question were examined to ensure that Kirk’s alleged killer, Tyler Robinson, did not have ties to any foreign government or entity.
