I'm Jess, mum to 2 kids, lover of the outdoors.
Passionate about mental health & wellbeing.
I've had a somewhat 'squiggly' career- Paediatrician turned primary teacher.
Now educator, advocate, keynote speaker.

I also happen to have experienced mental illness.

For too long, I carried this secret with shame,
Silenced by stigma.

Today is #CrazySocs4Docs Day.

A day to remember those we have lost & start conversations about mental health in healthcare.

Thanks. It's sometimes easy for us to forget that not everyone is travelling the same journey or has the same privilege as us.
My age & experience have given me some of those insights but listening and learning from others on social media has formed a huge part of understanding this better.

So to that female doctor I used to work with,

I am sorry.

Like so many others, I judged you.

I didn't even try to understand.

You are so much more dedicated than me,
You have a strength I didn't know existed.

I am sorry I didn't see that before.

I am that woman now.

The one who works part-time to support her family,

who can't stay late because her kids depend on her.

The woman one whose career did not go to plan and...

Well, I understand it now.

Because I am that woman.

She was in her 40s.
A resident doctor.

Older than all her peers, she was different.

She was the one who left on time and didn't bend over backwards to do more.

Eyes rolled.
People tutted.

She wasn't committed.
She lacked dedication.
Then I became that woman.

Imagine waking up every morning, stepping outside and being greeted by this crowd.

I'm very fortunate 💕.

Plus, my mental health is better for it.

Loss and grief is exactly what it was. Thank you 😊

It's too easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life.

I needed a reminder today to just slow down and take a breath.

I did this last year and loved it!
For some reason I needed permission to be creative and embrace my passion for writing and this course did exactly that!

Career paths, what people think (a straight arrow), what they actually are like (an arrow with a big loopy squiggle in the middle

I set out to be a clinical doctor forever.
Then life happened.
I left medicine and, with that, felt completely lost.

I have now found my way again,
Navigating a path less trodden,
But no less fulfilling.

Careers are not linear.
