My heart breaks for the kids who are going to face Maine winters hoping that the open oven door will push out enough heat to keep them warm. Chimney and space heater fires were a regular tragedy growing up, and they’re only going to increase now.

I was a poor kid in Maine, living with my family in old houses with oil furnaces and drafty windows. Section 8 funds and LIHEAP kept a roof over my family’s head and helped us know that most nights we would be warm enough.
