They’re a staple species along the coast here in eastern Canada. I think they’re quite common in many places in the North Atlantic.

I haven't had to deal with it much, but I've seen comments on other folks' pictures. There's something about owls that gets people worked up if they think you're too close. My local facebook birding page won't even let you post photos of owls anymore. Crazy.

Alas, no. This was a few years ago. Haven't seen one since, now that I think about it. I'm due!!

Before you get all up in my face about being too close to the owl, this was shot with a 1000mm lens and was deeply cropped in post processing. I was quite a ways away. The owl could not have cared less that I was there. It was in the tree when I found it and it was still in the tree when I left.

This is a "drove two hours in the dark to be at the coast at sunrise" photo. Sometimes things actually work out!

A striking black and white duck with a yellow bill is swimming in the calm bay water with the warm, orange light of sunrise bathing its feathers and its reflection on the calm water.

A small bird with a grey back and top of head with a white face and sides and just a slight hint of rusty reddish brown in its breast and rear flank is grasping onto a vertical tree trunk with a green background.

This was the first time I've ever seen a White-breasted Nuthatch in our yard (and there were two!). Always lots of Reds, but never their paler cousins. Very exciting!
