"the people of this country have had enough of experts"

So much stems from that casual line. A real mask off moment.

Something the Populist Right do that's related to simplism, is that:

1. They learn something entry-level/apparently self-evident.
2. They call it common sense.
3. They assume 'the libs' have missed it.

No, 'the libs' know about it, but also know it's about more than that. They've moved beyond it.

Three weeks of mass exposure to Matthew Goodwin’s worldview have not done the Reform brand much good

I'm hoping to do this too. If you'd asked me about it a decade ago I would have scoffed at the idea. But I'm plan 1 and still yet to pay it off, and that 9% is really starting to get annoying. However, at least I have a horizon of a few more years before it bogs off rather than it being permanent.

Reform win a seat: The true Volk have spoken and we all must listen.

Greens win a seat: Early reports that Muslims may have β€˜voted’ (an ancient Islamic practice designed to steal elections). How severely should the franchise be limited in response?

This is important. Reform keep taking positions that are only supported by the 25% of the electorate they already have and in doing so are negatively polarising everyone else against them.

A headline from GB News stating: Motorists switch to using public transport to avoid paying Β£5 daily congestion charge

In shock news, motorists have switched to public transport to avoid paying the Oxford Congestion Charge.
A spokesperson* said: "This is exactly what was meant to happen, and it did."

This is an underrated problem with food discourse. Yes, maybe the TV chef is getting Italian food all wrong and your Sicilian nonna knows the real secrets. But equally, maybe your Sicilian nonna's cooking is terrible

a thing that really opened my third eye was someone describing the origins of chinese-american cooking as "chinese men who had never cooked for themselves trying to reproduce from memory the things their mothers had made for them out of whatever ingredients they could find in old west mining towns"

Yeah. My conclusion from this would basically just be 'the relationship *can't* be managed', I'm not convinced there was a better strategy available.

Yeah this is the thing I keep retuning to. Yes, the predictive text can make pretty good stuff. I can torture really good stuff from it with a lot of guiding. It can also get a 45 student a 50 maybe even a 55, for example.

But - How. Do. We. Know. It's. Good!?

Same: The vector in our house was school letter home => parents googling to see adults on podcasts condemning and calling for calm => asking teenager who said it was the first she’d heard of it. More of an adult viral thing in some places.

03.03.2026 09:23 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Parents have always been an amazing vector for viral misinformation and rumours.

Once something gets to a school, it risks a backlash from parents if it doesn't take it seriously. Same with police. So they often distribute it even if sceptical. In turn, other parents worry a hoax will become real.

I did some digging on previous threads and some easy stuff is quite extortionate (1.75% + ~10p auth fee) but you can quickly get big discounts & cheap terminal rental if you shop around. There are site specifically for it. I got ~ 0.25% + 2p pretty quickly. Zettle does a 1.75% flat rate.

Lib Dem Leader Ed Davey:

"Tax exiles like Isabel Oakeshott and washed up old footballers who mock ordinary people who stay in the UK and pay our taxes... As we protect them, it's only right for tax exiles to start paying taxes to fund our armed forces, just like the rest of us".

as an archivist who herself thinks the internet archive is the greatest thing since sliced bread and that piracy is sometimes a moral necessity, please understand that much of the most necessary work is within a "legal gray area" at best and that sometimes we do not want to summon the ringwraiths

This is the thing that utterly infuriates me:

I was in ME around time of Arab spring & you absolutely knew this was a possibility. You had plans, knew embassy numbers etc. You got paid danger money because of it.

In last 10 years there’s been this deliberate ignorance because of new skyscrapers

But IMV this is what is going to happen, leaving EU/UK, India, Turkey, China and the Gulf States to deal with the mess

In shocking news Matt blames muslims for his defeat and would like you to pay him money so that he can keep pointing this out.

All gets a bit complex though doesn't it. The best way to stop them firing drones is to pulverise them in the storage warehouse, before they even take off. Just sitting there intercepting stuff will mean some get through.

02.03.2026 13:20 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I am utterly convinced by all the numbers arguments, by the human story arguments. But the people in, e.g Hull who get competed out of low skilled warehouse jobs can't just hop to the next nearest warehouse in Grimsby for e.g. The answer isn't nesc. slowing immigration but infrastructure investment.

02.03.2026 12:41 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Agreed. It also needs to speak to the right people. I'm very pro immigration but I work in a high skilled job with many immigrants. Lower skilled people in some areas with poor transport etc feel & are competed out with no other go to option. The pro argument IMO needs to acknowledge this.

It's fun how the social media companies are so explicitly going on a PR blitz. They're obviously worried

But Trump is putting the West in an impossible position. Of course there will be anger over another US war in the ME. But there would be anger too if we could have helped stop our allies getting killed in the blowback & didn't. There are no winners in a world where Trump makes the rules.

02.03.2026 10:18 β€” πŸ‘ 155    πŸ” 37    πŸ’¬ 7    πŸ“Œ 4

Trump has told four different journalists completely contradictory things about his aims.

It's going to be over in three days or four weeks... it's about regime change but he also wants to start talks again with the current regime...he's killed all the possible replacement leaders...

Total chaos.

This is a big reason European states are getting drawn in. Iran can keep chucking drones at Gulf states for longer than they can shoot them down.

I know so many immensely talented people who are just not going to get jobs in academia. The number of post-docs and job openings is so much lower than just a few years ago. The conditions are brutal.
