I was commanding in the 173rd at the time and on a staff ride with our team when I visited. What hit me the hardest about visiting was the familiar last names from units I’d served in throughout my career. I found it an incredibly humbling and consequential experience. Glad this was on your list.

IMO, the most important thing is to make sure that the 70 and 80 year old you is getting the care you need.
For me the goal wasn’t necessarily about a VA rating, but making sure my service related injuries were documented so old me isn’t pissed at younger me 20-30 years from now. /x

You are right about referrals and follow-ups.

Remember though, you aren’t going to be able to fix everything that’s broke (e.g., crushed vertebrae) but managing pain and working through physical therapy will help your long term health.
This will carry over into your retirement. /4

As you are working through the form, you’ll be able to see what is and isn’t in your records.

Make appointments for those specific ailments through your PCM.

It took me about a year and a half to piece those together while balancing a very demanding job for about 10 month of the 22 I had. /3

Something to keep in mind:
You’ll want to file your VA claim 180-90 days before your retirement. So backing off the start of your prep by at least 12-15 months from that mark is the minimum.

Recommend getting a copy of your medical around that time. (It may take 30-40 days to get them). /1

This would also make JMRC rotation build sustained interoperability—rather than at the end of a rotation and before redeployment.
Never understood why they went to NTC before coming to Europe as an opposed to starting the rotation at JMRC with a large Allied team.
