Another nugget: one night I saw a woman in nothing but a paper hospital gown pounding beers at the Dixie tavern across the street.

Ash Wednesday 1883 in New Orleans: two men arrested for wearing women's clothes are released after police verify that they were still out in their costumes from a Mardi Gras ball the day before

I had no idea…tho I have read a bit about bicycles catching on in the 1890s. Lots of change on the street in a short time.

Sex work was legal in Storyville, and cocaine was sold over the counter, but this dude got arrested for speeding when his car went over 6 miles per hour (in 1904).

The Mardi Gras Indian Tradition Carrying Generations of Black History Black Masking Indians transform New Orleans with hand-sewn suits and street rituals that challenge who has the power to move freely and be seen.

As gentrification pushes longtime residents out of the neighborhoods where the tradition was born, chiefs and tribes use the art of masking to hold fast to the community, history, and joy that built Black New Orleans.

I went as a Wobble Cop on Mardi Gras Day years ago and people kept coming up to me like I was an actual cop. Had to keep pointing out that I was drinking a bottle of whiskey in a brown bag and my badge said Officer Wobbleβ€”I can’t help you find your friend, ma’am.

Rosa Hawkins of the Dixie Cups put out a book about the group a few years ago that was really good but seemed not to get much attention. It’s called Chapel of Love. Recommended.

The Pelicans lack of winning is directly correlated with the loss of locker favorites and dawgs such as JV, Larry Nance, Dyson Daniels, Naji Marshall, and now Jose Alvarado. Not only were they good basketball players and people, they showed up every night and outworked everyone.

On the other end, Pelicans games are about to find new levels of depressing. Jose has been the best dude to root for in New Orleans since he got here.

Yeah, it’s really impressive how they built a whole institution and archive around the house. There’s more $ to draw on in NY, but N.O. needs to do better.

Would love to see New Orleans leadership take this level of interest in what remains of Armstrong’s (and his contemporaries’) legacy here.
