Oh no, now economists are pretending that they know aeronautics.
WWII fighter planes could do 400 mph. Shouldn't economists have figured out planned obsolescence in cars by 1980, ten years after the Moon Landing?
Where is car Depreciation Data since 1980, if not 1950?
NET Domestic Product anyone?

1980 was a decade after the Moon Landing. Shouldn't all economists have figured out planned obsolescence in automobiles by then?
So what does consumer depreciation have to do with economics, Now?
Marx mentioned depreciation a number of times in Das Kapital but there were no automobiles, THEN!

There were 200,000,000 motor vehicles in the United States in 1995. How many are operational today? Where is the Annual Demand Side Depreciation Data for the US since Sputnik?
What is Net Domestic Product?
NDP = GDP - Depreciation
But that Depreciation is Dcap, Capital Goods only.
Economists might be able to come up with reasonable numbers for cars if they tried because of all of the state DMVs. But refrigerators, televisions, all Durable Consumer Goods? What about for the entire planet?
But NO!
All of the Demand Side Depreciation for every country on the planet can just be ignored for 70 years.
No problemo!
How does Planned Obsolescence affect the planet and the economy?
Maybe it should be:
NDP = GDP - (Dcap + Dcon)
Dcon is Depreciation of Durable Consumer Goods
It is just a simple Algebra problem.
The Laws of Physics do not care about the difference between Capital and Consumer Goods.

I was surprised to find that Marx used the word 'depreciation' 100+ times in Das Kapital. I search for it because our nitwit economists leave consumer Depreciation out of the Net Domestic Product equation.

We think about economics differently.
You talk as tho "The Market" is just the sellers. The buyers are just as much a part.
But as technology has gotten more complicated the sellers can hide more and more info.

How can tech maintenance people not know about planned obsolescence? And not notice that Economists are technological illiterates?
I was working for IBM around 1980 in the General Systems Division. The System/23 Datamaster in the upper right was to replace the older 5110 in the upper left. I was working the night shift when someone on the day shift set up both machines on a table. For customer demonstrations and sales I presume.
I NeVeR saw the word 'benchmark' on IBM documentation so I decided to write my own and do some tests.
I created a Bubble Sort program and Prime Numbers by Division program in BASIC.
The old machine was almost twice as fast as the DM23.
The DM23 used an 8-bit 8085 processor having 6000 transistors while the DisplayWriter, priced $1100 less than the DM23, in the lower left which used a 16-bit 8086 processor with 29,000. It was from the Office Products Division and was supposedly "just a word processor". IBM only provided WP software.
However Digital Research, owned by Gary Kildall, supplied a CP/M-86 Boot Disc for $200. With the right software it might be 16 times as fast as the DM23. Compilers produce more efficient code than interpreters.
In the lower right is the APC from NEC, a Japanese company. It was pretty much the same hardware combination as the DisplayWriter though it looked rather different. You could buy Two of them for less than the price of One DataMaster23.
What would economists say about that?
What does "The Market" want? If the market cannot comprehend the product then the "Capitalist" can advertise junk.
I worked for IBM. Benchmarks are used to test performance. I never saw the word in IBM documentation. I had to write my own.
I tend to look at how technology makes changes possible.
