09.03.2026 12:06 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A biography that deliberately excludes so-called "petty, demoralizing details" so as not to upset a reader's delicate constitution is not a biography at all; it is fiction. And if a subject is "diminished" by the truth, so be it. Not our job to burnish a legend built on your fantasies.
09.03.2026 10:45 β π 9 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

Honored to have an excerpt from my book, "In Trees" (out 4/7) in the pages of this week's
@newyorker.com
This piece is about the summer I spent in a treehouse to blockade an oil pipeline, and why some protest movements change history, while others fade quietly into obscurity.
I'm also giving a biography masterclass in Melbourne, next Thursday, if that is more your speed.

Because of the National driver register, since their licenses are suspended, trans folks cannot move to another state and get a new license until they remove the suspension on their existing Kansas license.
They can't even escape this by moving to another state.

13.02.2026 18:55 β π 40 π 20 π¬ 2 π 2On Nov. 16, a mental health counselor recorded in Kamillaβs medical records that her mother reported the girl had lost her appetite after being βserved food that contained worms.β A week later, the couple said, children were told to gather in the gym for what they believed would be a Thanksgiving celebration. Excitement spread as families saw tables set with turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, they said. The children waited expectantly. But when a parent asked when the celebration would begin, Oksana said, staff told them the holiday meal was for employees, not detainees. The children, she said, watched despondently as the feast was packed away.
On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.
The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.
But the food wasnβt for detainees β it was for the staff.
Stone cold classic.
