Finished this morn, and while reading I periodically wondered if I was having a stroke, or experiencing that strange rush of meaningless-yet-meaningful images you get when returning to consciousness after passing out. Loved it.

Nightmare Alley: Born for It An adaptation of a classic pulp novel by William Lindsay Gresham, Guillermo del Toro’s first foray into film noir is an intensely evocative exploration of how human impulses can give rise to monsters.

Great essay by @sarahweinman.com on del Toro's "Nightmare Alley," for Criterion.

I'm shaking almost too hard to type. I entered SLC airport and heard screams and cries for help. I could see people gathered around, watching. I sped over to discover this woman face down on the floor, four grown men pushing her down, while she cried "HELP ME" and pled for her child.

In my obviously wrong because immigrant understanding, New York culture is that racist opportunists like Cuomo are beneath contempt β€” but hey, what do I know? Dumb dual citizen and all.

I too am a dual citizen and am sad to hear that it means I cannot possible β€œunderstand New York culture,” even though I lived there for seven years and wrote a book that was partly about New York (gay) culture.

Yes! But he was certainly not at Pearl Harbor for the bombing. And various other weird claims (including, as you note, the claim about the snow leopard being the only book known in the UK! Christopher MacLehose, his longtime editor in London, would have something to say).

The Australian Cartoonists Association welcomes the decision of the federal Attorney-General, Michelle aRowland, to reject the Productivity Commission’s proposal to exempt tech companies from copyright laws, which would have handed them free rein to mine creative content to train their Artificial Intelligence models, without recognition or recompense for artists.

We are glad the Albanese Government recognises the value and precarious of the creative industries and encourage their ongoing support of artists in all fields.

Actually it is my favorite book of the year. Makes most contemporary American fiction look anemic and unimaginative by comparison.
