Yesterday was the 250th anniversary of the lighting of lanterns at the Old North Church in Boston. Will we yet be able to celebrate liberty and constitutional law next year?

β€œThe accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary in the same hands … may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.”

For at least the last 35 years (maybe more), I have read Lincoln's Proclamation of Thanksgiving from 1863 at services in different parts of the country. Last night, I read it again at Trinity Moravian Church, and each year it grabs me differently.

Read President Abraham Lincoln's proclamation upon declaring a national day of Thanksgiving β€’ Minnesota Reformer Amid the bloodiest war in American history, Abraham Lincoln implored us to give thanks to the Almighty and proclaimed a Thanksgiving holiday.

"...with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience."

He also loved laughter and humor, and his talks were always a HOOT! He was one of the founders of Red Letter Christians, a group which focussed (like Moravians) on the actual words and teachings of Jesus rather than the convoluted medieval theology that drives many denominations.

Tony ran a ministry in Haiti and a school in Philadelphia that was only for kids who had been washed out of normal school. I did several TV interviews with him, and he was kind enough to come speak at our (tiny) church in Reading, PA for our 80th anniversary -- just because I asked him.

RIP Tony Campolo, one of God's unique originals. Tony passed into the more immediate presence of the Savior today at age 89. Professor of Sociology at Eastern College in Philadelphia, he was passionate about minsitry to the poor and disenfranchised.
