In the UK groups of 6 seats are common in primary schools, and rows of paired desks more common in secondary schools. Some places are experimenting with beanbags, standing desks and clip boards though!

Certainly girls' attainment seems to raise social consternation- perhaps this blog has good ideas about why. "The problem isn’t girls’ gainsβ€”it’s a competitive culture that equates boys’ worth with dominance over other boys and offers no workable script for competing with girls as peers."
