"No. Come here." Her voice was muffled, face half-buried in her pillow. She ached to say yes, to slip into her usual place in the crook of Cassandra's arm, but Cassandra's bruised and battered body demanded she exercise more caution than that. "I shouldn't. You need to be careful of your leg. I'm sorry." "It already hurts. Please?"

listen i love ao3 as much as the next guy but ive seen people quit fic writing over the past few years because people comment and engage with authors way less, and then everyone still freaks out when ao3 goes down- if a fic is irreplaceable to u, let the author know!

Finally she pulled up a chair next to the bed, and without truly thinking about it, started to braid the long lock of hair that fell down over Cassandra's shoulder. She was clumsy with it, fingers stumbling over the motions that seemed to take twice as long as they ought to. She had only ever learned to braid her own hair one-handed, and then by using her teeth. Most days, she didn't even have to do that; Cassandra liked the ritual of it, slow mornings spent in front of the mirror, talking over cups of tea while she braided Evelyn's hair and pinned it up off her neck. Her own attempt was uneven, lopsided, and still it felt vitally important that she try.
