I think we should protect everyone, including criminals, from crime and harm. I don't think we should fix jails and prisons just because some good people might be in them. I think we should fix prisons and jails because people live and work there, and because people, even bad people, deserve safety.

Sometimes casual commentators on prison reform issues will frame things as though the reason to fix and fight to prevent crimes in prisons & jails is to protect innocent people who are wrongfully accused and thus shouldn't be there from further harm. I understand this view. It doesn't go far enough.

Bukele has long courted and served Trump, working to advance his agenda throughout the Americas. I do not doubt that Trump is celebrating the news out of El Salvador. Ugh. What horseshit.

Other Central American politicians have been in this alliance as well, perhaps most infamously JOH of Honduras, whose party shattered the Honduran constitution and allowed JOH to be reelected partway through the 2010s, despite historic Honduran fears of dictators. JOH would later be arrested.

Deeply disheartening news out of #ElSalvador as the minions of far-right president & self-proclaimed dictator #Bukele, successfully change the constitution and set the stage for Bukele to remain president indefinitely. This nefarious network of goons is one part of a global alliance of dictators.

Trump has a long legacy, one he is proud of, of antisemitism. Why the fuck would the ADL expect more of him? Did they expect him to be MORE antisemitic? Antisemitism is par for the course for the president.

Your worth is not determined by what you contribute. Your value is not determined by your net worth. Your rights are not things you purchase or earn in exchange for working.

I am physically disabled, chronically ill, and I still work. And I'd be more than happy for my tax dollars to feed people, help them with healthcare, and house them, even if they CAN work and CHOOSE not to.

Hell even if you are more than able to work, more than able-bodied, more than capable of physically working, and choose not to, you still deserve healthcare, housing, and food.

For the record: You deserve food, housing, and healthcare, by virtue of being a human being. And not because of God, or because you're an American. Yes, you still deserve things even if you choose not to work.

It is a personal attack on the working class, a specific, targeted attack on healthcare workers and medical professionals across the country. It's just awful.

There is ENORMOUS variance among trans people. We are not a homogeneous group wherein meeting one of us allows you to make accurate generalizations about others. Laverne Cox is a trans person. Caitlyn Jenner is also a trans person. Elliot Page is ALSO a trans person. Not all of us are celebrities.

I'm seeing a resurgence of the "It's not transphobic to not want to date trans people" argument. And listen y'all... It is transphobic to say you don't want to date trans people. It IS transphobic to paint all trans people into a single category to write off the idea that you could date them.

Coming from a military family with a legacy of service in the military this day has always meant a lot to me. I hope you can get what you need, whatever that happens to be, from today.

Moving forward for us to stay a free country, one free not only of foreign control but of internal strife and destructive division will take courage, cleverness, and hope.

On Memorial Day we recall and honor the sacrifices of those who fought and died for our freedom. For us to become a free, and powerful, country took a lot of sacrifice, a lot of courage, and a lot of hope.

To call for a "Happy" Memorial Day has always felt... odd to me. But I hope that this Memorial Day is as introspective and refreshing as you need it to be for yourself and your loved ones.

We have each other. And that love gives us something to fight for. Something to vote for. When you're voting AGAINST something it's easy to fall into cynicism and hopelessness, but when you're voting for something worth protecting, worth safeguarding, it's much harder to give into despair.

Evil works hard to make people cynical, to make fun of hopeful people. And it works. Sometimes. In the short term. But hope is the key. Hope, love, compassion. They're all critical parts of building a new future. The key to overcoming cynicism is to have something worth fighting for. And we do.
