This is not what a Just Transition looks like.
A Just Transition still involves 100% renewable energy sources, with equitable access to alternatives and fair job conversions as we adjust. Partial reliance on turf is not an option.
Call it idealist, but it's unequivocally necessary - and possible
Sorry Philip, but you're not addressing my main concern: that burning turf causes indoor and outdoor air pollution that harms human health.
Doing a piece on turf in 2026 without acknowledging that feels like a significant omission.
Continued harm from air pollution β just transition.
But that ignores the harmful effects of burning turf.
09.03.2026 11:48 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Not providing people with an alternative to the ultra polluting fuel that is turf, which causes significant harm to human health, is the opposite to just transition in my opinion. That's not purist, that's just public health, never mind the wider environmental concerns re turf cutting.

The world is literally on fire.
The Irish Media: more fossil fuels please.
Turf cutting damages fragile ecosystems and burning it creates serious air pollution.
A just transition isnβt letting people keep burning it, allowing the status quo to continue.
Itβs about making sure they have affordable, accessible, cleaner, and healthier alternatives.
David McWilliams: Without any oil production of our own, we are exposed to fallout from Middle East conflict (original headline).
There will always be another conflict and another excuse to continue our harmful relationship with fossil fuels...
Same from the Irish Time and David McWilliams. They did change the headline though...

The details on the flight cost was a very nice touch.
Not often you see that mentioned in the media.
Every time you think youβve seen the bottom of USraeli depravity, they immediately lower the bar even further into the moral abyss.

The dairy industry has operated for too long on the freedom to pollute.
Workers whose jobs are now at risk should ask their bosses why they did not invest in meeting legal requirements.

A great piece from @thinkorswim.bsky.social! The perfect Sunday read. Here's to hoping that the Irish government will learn from Costa Rica.

A key aim of the DCC's Active Travel Programme is decluttering footpaths. Yet along the Fitzwilliam Quay to Londonbridge Rd scheme, they've managed to install a forest of signage for just 500m of cycle path.
Good cycling infrastructure should be intuitive & legible, not need constant instructions.

Where Ireland has failed, Costa Rica has succeeded ... and then some!
A worthwhile read from @thinkorswim.bsky.social

"Irelandβs staggering lack of national ambition on nature, #climate is in marked contrast to Costa Rica, which despite having a fraction of our wealth, has been able to meet fundamental needs of its citizens while respecting nature."
My piece in Irish Times today

Whatever about small local impacts, and regardless of the NTA's ongoing PR campaign, the national picture is not changing significantly. Car dependence remains stubbornly high around the country.
The reasons for that ought to be clear by now.

Despite abysmal active transport infrastructure, more people are cycling. This is great news.
Imagine what we could achieve if we actually provided people with the world class active transport infrastructure they deserve.

Great, positive news, terrible headline.
The use of the word 'dramatic' sends the wrong message.
So true: βIf the goal is genuinely to rejuvenate Dublin city centre, we must first ask: rejuvenate it for whom? A city is not simply a balance sheet or a property portfolioβ β¦

Irresponsible, head-in-the-sand journalism at its finest.
Not a single mention of the emissions involved, nor of the very real damage this scale of air travel inflicts on human health and the planet.
We have to stop running Dublin as a for-profit business.
My letter in The Irish Times this morning.

Nature loss can cost the British economy more than the NHS in 2030. That is in FOUR years.
This is pretty much 100% applicable to Ireland.
This is not some distant threat. This is happening right now while the Irish government is busy expanding Dublin Airport and building more data centres.

No mention of health, climate action, or sustainability.
Yet another missed opportunity to create a healthier, fairer city for all.
