On this day in 2005, NASA's Deep Impact mission launched. Its mission, successfully completed in July 2005, was to deploy an impactor to collide with the comet Tempel 1. Once finished, two Earth flybys let it encounter Hartley 2 in 2010.

Yesterday, BepiColombo, ESA and JAXA's joint Mercury orbiter performed its final flyby prior to orbital insertion next year. The flyby took it 300km [185mi] over Mercury's north pole, where it captured this stunning image shown today.
