Random decades part 2. On next Monday's #devonbookhour I'm curious about books you love from the 1870's and the 1940's. What has stood the test of time for you and what are the differences in styles of writing over those 70 years? Here are a few to get you thinking

Both and, if you'd like, send me an email and I'll post on my other platforms too.

I realised that after I asked (the pace of #devonbookhour beats me sometimes). For those who aren't familiar, it would be lovely if you'd say a little about the series as a whole..And please do keep me updated on Book 8 so I can share it with our community. 😊

Hi Trina - the thing about 'period' books is that I think we have to make allowance for the prevailing culture, whilst not endorsing it of course, and seeing the books in that context. #devonbookhour

#devonbookhour Reading about the music aspect is good but you do get a sense of the social history of the period which is always intersting.

Go for it - Proust - I'm with you, Joyce - I wish I could get into Ulysses but I failed after page 330 ish, Melville I didn't enjoy after the first third - I do often think I should give Joyce anotehr go but other books grab me first #devonbookhour

Your preferred genre seems to be music based - you must be getting a rich picture of the changes in that industry and how that tracks social change? #devonbookhour

A book(s) to be savoured and read slowly. I read all of them in one go, one Summer probably 12-15 years ago. I loved them but not sure I'd be drawn back to re-reading them. Look forward to hearing what you think secodn time round #devonbookhour

Blimey - if it's about 2 tone music, I was a student working in a youth centre (sadly over 40 years ago now! - very ageing 🤣) #devonbookhour

Perhaps it was you who recommended it then. If so, thank you. Trollope is wonderful - very much of the period but his characters and plot are exceptional. Two series - teh Chronicles of Barset (church based but wit wider social commentary) and the Palliser novels (more political) #devonbookhour
