I guess what I will say is this: the (probably necessary) cutting out of Frenesi/Perfidia's extended family and focusing on Zoyd/Bob + Prairie/Willa as a nuclear dyad makes the "we fight on in generational cycles and lose but have each other" ending feel more hollow and individualistic.

Finished! In many ways a confounding book. I liked (or rather, appreciated) the sort of rolling structure of the book - a series of vignettes and essays that are loosely chronological but reflect the scattered way in which we relate our own lives. I'm not sure I enjoyed the experience tho.

Are they betting on the middle of the officer class being more sympathetic to them? Browbeating the top brass only seems to make sense as a move to sow division / give (implied political) permission to lower ranks to disobey superior officers
