As an avid follower of live-service games, he was eager to make sure the standout titles in the space this year received their due.

Patrick Dane, This Week in Videogames News Editor, Dies Patrick will be remembered for his passion and enthusiasm for his work and the games industry, and as a cherished colleague and friend.

Patrick Dane, longtime games and entertainment journalist and News Editor at This Week in Videogames, has died in a motor vehicle accident. He was 34 years old.

Words can't even begin to describe this loss.

Pat was a staple in my day to day. The constant Discord messages, him sending me whatever internet trend he was obsessed with at the moment, constantly trying to plan our next Destiny dungeon run, the list goes on...

On December 27th, our family’s world changed forever. My brother Patrick, my dad John, and my step-mom Valerie were involved in a devastating car accident, and Patrick passed from this world far too soon. My dad and Valerie have miraculously survived. They remain in critical condition in ICU, but they are making the small steps forward each day. Patrick was a beautiful soul. He was gentle, curious, passionate, and deeply kind. Every person I have spoken to has spoken about his kindness. It was something everyone felt in his presence. I am endlessly proud of the person he became and of the quiet way he supported and cared for others. Over this past week, I keep finding myself returning to memories of him as a child, full of laughter, humour, and light. I was so lucky to spend Christmas Day with him, with my dad and Valerie, and I will treasure those moments forever. Patrick was the happiest I had seen him in a long time, and I truly believe that matters. I will carry that with me always. I have had the honour of speaking with some of Patrick’s closest friends and hearing beautiful stories about his gaming, his loyalty, and the support he gave to so many people. One friend described him as a “guardian of light,” and that feels deeply true. It is something I will hold close to my heart forever. Patrick, you are so loved and so deeply missed. There will always be a space in our family shaped exactly like you. Thank you for the love you gave us and the light you brought into our lives. I've known Pat for a while, but over the last year, having accidentally gotten him and @olliecragg.bsky.social hooked on D&D, I had the pleasure of getting to know him a lot better and getting to talk to him daily and game multiple times a week.

I couldn’t have asked for a better friend. The hole Pat leaves is immeasurable but I am so very thankful for the time we got to spend together. The warmth, positivity, and humour that he brought every day was nothing short of spectacular. I don’t have the words to describe how much I’ll miss him.

Truthfully, I don’t have adequate words to do Pat justice, nor how devastated I am and how much he will always mean to me, and I won’t attempt to try here. What I'm most thankful for though is our mutual friends who I cherish and that have been immediately wonderful support.

You left Lucian out there exploring the world, doing good, and bringing kindness to people that needed it, and left me with a scrap of paper with his name on to bring him back when needed. I'll hold that paper close forever, my friend.

The family of Patrick Dane has made public today the devastating news that their beloved son and brother was in a car accident on December 27th and is no longer with us. His father and stepmother, who were also in the vehicle, are in critical condition, but stable.

enjoyed a few things in 2025 (Blue Prince and Clipse's second LP in particular) but the real standout this year was, no question, falling in deep into DnD. some moments I'll never forget (some hilarious, some legitimately moving), and a group of immediate friends I've loved doing stupid voices with.
