A pair of Spiked Shieldbugs (Picromerus bidens) I disturbed at Bagmere NR (a private site) in Cheshire last Friday. One of the predatory shieldbug species, the female has impaled a sawfly. @tanyptera.bsky.social

21.07.2025 20:21 β π 14 π 3 π¬ 0 π 0Short-winged Conehead, Conocephalus dorsalis f. burri (the flying form of a typically flightless species). A slender, green cricket, with unusually long, brown wings. This is a female, with a pointed, curving ovipositor.
The unusual macropterous form (f. burri) of the usually flightless Short-winged Conehead. Males are v. difficult to tell from Long-winged C-H but females like this are easier as they have shorter, curving ovipositors. A 1st for me, seen yesterday at Prenton Dell Claypit. @tanyptera.bsky.social

Reminded me that I found a hoverfly pupa recently that looks like Episyrphus balteatus but I've no idea about the second one. @geoffwilkinson.bsky.social do you know please?

One of the nice points that I often raise is that mosquitoes are not always problematic - although research is limited, many species now are highlighted as #pollinators

Malaria or Ague as it was known was once common(ish) in the British Isles. Although we still have the vectors we donβt have the plasmodium.
Draining wetlands, Little Ice Age, improved housing, reduced exposure - all may have helped thenβ¦
