I’ve done some digging on “86” (because I have nothing better to do…don’t look at my yard!) and can find no references for “kill or assassination”. It seems to have originated with short order diners (think “Mel’s Diner”) and means “remove”. Ex: Waitress tells cook: “Burger & fries, 86 the pickles.”
