Kristi Noem Says ICE Will Be ‘All Over’ the Super Bowl
“Asked on Friday by the right-wing podcaster Benny Johnson if there would be “ICE enforcement” at the Super Bowl, Noem replied, “There will be,” adding that federal immigration officers would be “all over” the event.”

AAC&U Statement on the Trump Administration’s “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education”
@aacu.org has stepped up & called the Trump "compact" for higher ed what it is: "The compact is, in effect, an ultimatum...This is not constructive engagement." Big question is where is @aau.edu? If your university is part of AAU, write to your president & trustees now.

“The compact’ is a maximalist document, demanding a near-complete surrender of core academic freedoms of the university. It purports to give vast new leverage to the DOJ…to take away federal “benefits” to which the university and its faculty and students are entitled under federal law.” ⬇️⬇️

The question journalists need to be asking is: WHY is the government trying this?
It’s because they want to control universities in unlawful ways that courts will not allow; it’s not working; so they’re trying to get universities to sign up “voluntarily” for unlawful levels of government control.

Colleges weigh whether to sign onto Trump plan or forgo federal benefits
A new proposal from the Trump administration would give colleges funding advantages if they adopt conservative priorities.
“No self-respecting university could ever accept something like this,” said Lee Bollinger, a First Amendment scholar and former Columbia University president. “Trying to protect conservative ideas against being ‘belittled’ — that’s about as violative of the First Amendment interests as you can get.”

It’s a 1️⃣-2️⃣punch: The State of Texas, the Regents, & the President dissolve the Faculty Council. Then Trump offers a compact that will affect academic freedom, curriculum, student recruitment, research priorities, the future of academic programs. Once faculty had a voice in such decisions. No longer.

Opinion | Trump’s ‘Compact’ With Universities Is Just Extortion
"This is extortion, plain and simple.... The only solution is solidarity and collective action against this effort at federal control over higher education."

‘He wasn’t this national hero’: US college students voice concern over Charlie Kirk’s idolization
Black, brown and LGBTQ+ students across the US are puzzled by all the praise the far-right commentator has received after his killing
Progressive students in the south have had to navigate “deeply uncomfortable” conversations with their conservative family members (after Charlie Kirk’s death), said John, a sophomore at Appalachian State University in North Carolina.

Chris Rufo's disastrous takeover of New College in Florida shows what universities would become if they sign the Trump regime's extortionary "compact."
New College was supposed to model the anti-woke conservative higher-ed Americans crave. Instead, it showed the opposite, and serves as a warning.

The Trump Administration’s ‘Compact’ Is a Trap
Choose independence. Refuse to sign.
"To the presidents and trustees of those nine universities: This decision will define you. You can be remembered as leaders who defended higher education’s independence against attack, or as those who surrendered it. There is no middle ground. Choose independence." www.chronicle.com/article/the-...

you can often tell the fake academic freedom/free speech heroes from the real ones because when asked to think of ways to defend freedom, the fake ones don’t generally think of unions, and in fact often blame them. wrongo!!

"Should Universities work together to fend off the administration's attacks on academic freedom and free speech?" is a key question that rank-and-file faculty (i.e., @aaup.org) are answering in the affirmative and University administrators are mostly shrugging off. Time is running out.
